Lucy Harmon, an American teenager is arriving in the lush Tuscan countryside to be sculpted by a family friend who lives in a beautiful villa there. Lucy visited there four years earlier and exchanged a kiss with an Italian boy with whom she hopes to become reacquainted. Lucy’s mother has committed suicide since then, and she also hopes to discover the identity of her father, whom her mother hinted was a resident of the villa. Once she arrives, Lucy meets and befriends a variety of eccentric visitors. Lucy has decided to lose her virginity and becomes an object of intense interest to the men of the household, but the suitor she finally selects is not the initial object of her affection.

Le film se passe en Toscane dans une propriété aux environs de Sienne. La jeune Américaine Lucy y était déjà une fois il y a quelques années et maintenant elle y retourne après le décès de sa mère, qui était l’amie de Ian et de Diana, lesquels vivent là depuis plusieurs décennies. Ian est sculpteur, et elle est son modèle. Lors de son premier séjour, Lucy était tombée amoureuse du jeune Niccolo et elle souhaite maintenant le revoir. Lucy est dans un bâtiment annexe, et sa chambre est voisine de celle d’Alex, un écrivain gravement malade. Ce sont pour lui les derniers jours de vie et il est heureux de la présence de cette jolie jeune femme. La famille de Diana et de Ian se réunit chaque année pour l’anniversaire de Diana. C’est pourquoi leur fille Miranda est là également. Leur fils Christopher arrive plus tard d’un voyage en compagnie de Niccolo.
