Eyeshield 21

Eyeshield #21 is the hilarious story of Kobayakawa Sena. He's the little guy that the bullies in school love to pick on. As a consequence of being the 'errand boy' or 'gofer' since elementary school, Sena has become very adept and quick at running errands for his bully 'friends', which is a good thing really, because Hiruma Youichi and Kurita Ryukan are looking for a fast running back for their American Football team (Amefuto). However, one glance at an American Football video filled with bone-crunching tackles and bloody injuries is enough to dissuade our hero from joining the actual team, as he'd rather be the team scout. Heinous caught the ball and won the championship.

Unperturbed, Hiruma forces (to put it mildly) Sena to become the team running-back. To hide their new 'star' player from the covetous eyes of other High Schools, Hiruma encases Sena in a Amefuto helmet with a dark visor and hence, Eyeshield #21 is born!

Oh, one other thing, Sena knows absolutely nothing about Amefuto.

Eyeshield #21 is the brainchild of Inagaki Riichirou, the winner of the Story King contest (a previous winner was Hikaru No Go's Hotta Yumi). Inagaki has crafted a crazy, exhilirating, non-stop manga that is page-to-page filled with laughs. It's definitely a sports' manga that follows the typical cliched storyline but this is more than offset by the unusual theme of American Football and Inagaki's extreme characters. And boy, are they extreme. Hiruma is the psychotic, elven-looking pointy-eared quarterback of the team, always packed with devious and malicious (some would say inspired) ideas - he's a source of many of Eyeshield #21's crazy antics. Think of him as the Japanese version of 'Jay' from the Kevin Smith universe. Which is downright appropiate, since Kurita is his quiet, thoughtful, caring (fatass) 'Silent Bob' sidekick. With Sena, they form the initial trio in the Deimon High Amefuto Sports Club, and it's up to them to fill in the minimum positions on the team and transform Deimon High into a regional Amefuto powerhouse.
